What is the Mayes County Trails Alliance?

Since 2015, Mayes County has been passionate about establishing a county-wide, multi-use bicycle trail system that connects all Mayes County communities. The Mayes County Trails Master Plan was created in 2016. While this plan connects the towns, it is up to the towns to decide what the trail system looks like within their city limits to connect to the county system. Currently, two towns in Mayes County have their own local trails plan: Pryor and Locust Grove. The Mayes County Trails Alliance works with the county, towns, and multiple partners to complete the plans mentioned by applying for grant opportunities. The Alliance also works to raise awareness of these plans while also working to get local plans for the other towns.

Why Mayes County Trails?

Mayes County’s trail system will provide safe and convenient facilities for walkers, joggers, bicyclists, in-line skaters, and wheelchair users. The trails will connect residential areas to significant outdoor recreation areas, lakes, and parks. The system will offer citizens an enhanced alternative to automobile travel, providing routes to popular destinations, including employment centers, retail establishments, tourist attractions, medical facilities, schools, and parks. Since trails promote nonpolluting forms of transportation, the trail system will improve air quality and reduce congestion in the area. Greenway trail corridors will also improve water quality and reduce the impacts of flooding by preserving floodplain lands and streamside buffers. The local economy will also benefit from trail development through increased tourism revenues, property values, and business attraction. In all, the Mayes County trail system will make the region a cleaner, greener and better place to live, work, and play for generations to come.
